The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a Preliminary Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for Prince William County, Virginia, on September 30, 2020.  These maps include an update of floodplain boundaries based on previous analyses and updated topographic information for Zone AE areas (those flood plains with detailed flood elevations), and also include updated floodplain boundaries for Zone A areas (those floodplains without detailed flood elevations).  The FIS and the FIRMs are used for land use planning, and for enforcement of the City’s floodplain ordinance.

The comment period for the preliminary FIRMs started on November 13, 2020, and ends on December 12, 2020.  It is anticipated that the new maps will become effective sometime in late 2021.
