2009 Assessment Review and Appeal Process
April 22, 2009

Notices of Assessment for 2009 were mailed to all property owners on April 22, 2009, and become effective July 1, 2009.  If you do not receive a notice within the next two weeks please contact the Office of the City Assessor and a copy of the notice will be mailed to you.  Notices were mailed to the property owner of record as of January 1, 2009, but owners are required by state tax law to immediately forward the Notice to the new owner.

Assessment Review

Property owners have until June 30, 2009, to file a Request for Review of Assessment form with the Office of the City Assessor concerning the 2009 assessment.  Property owners and their agents are encouraged to file a request for review with the Office prior to filing an appeal to the Board of Equalization, but this is not a requirement.  Often differences may be resolved prior to the filing of an appeal.

Assessment Appeal

Property owners have until August 3, 2009, to challenge the 2009 assessment to the Board of Equalization.  The five member Board of Equalization is appointed by the Prince William County Circuit Court.  The Governing Body does not hear appeals of real estate assessments.  If you want additional information about the Board of Equalization, please call the Office of the City Clerk at 703-335-8808.

The Appeal of Real Estate Assessment form can be downloaded by clikcing here.

If you are dissatisfied with the decision by the Board of Equalization, you may file a suit in the Prince William County Circuit Court within three years of the date when the tax was levied.

A pending review by the Office of the City Assessor or an appeal to the Board of Equalization does not change the due date for real estate taxes.
