Manassas Park is an independent jurisdiction in Northern Virginia, approximately 30 miles southwest of Washington, DC. The city borders Prince William County and the City of Manassas. The City of Manassas Park is accepting applications for the position of Porter. The essential function of the position within the organization is to ensure that our public buildings are clean and in functioning order. Porters sweep and mop hallways, vacuum carpets, clean bathrooms and order cleaning supplies. They also know how to use manual and power tools to do minor repairs such as fixing leaky faucets or changing light bulbs. For major problems, Porters inform management.

 

All positions at the City of Manassas Park require a customer service mindset, in accordance with the Customer Service related focus of the City. 

 

Specific Roles and Responsibilities

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

 

·With the guidance and assistance of the Facilities Manager, complete minor building improvements and maintenance/repair of HVAC, mechanical, electrical and/or plumbing systems.

·Sweep, vacuum, and mop. Move furniture to facilitate cleaning. Keep floors and carpets clean. Occasional carpet shampooing and floor waxing. Dust ledges and woodwork. Polish metal fixtures. Wash windows, blinds and walls. Occasional paint jobs.

·Keep restroom clean, orderly, and in sanitary condition. Clean, disinfect, and deodorize bathroom stalls, urinals, toilet bowls, mirrors, sinks, and hand towel dispensers. Replace deodorizers, toilet tissue, hand towels, and soap. Unclog drains as needed.

·Collect and dispose of trash, secure new liners in trashcans. Keep trash storage area clean. Remove litter and debris from grounds. Empty and clean ashtrays.

·Setup and tear down for events.

·Unlock and lock facilities as required.

·Keep sidewalks and entrances clear of snow, ice, and other hazards.

·Respond to any repair or cleaning emergencies.

·Maintain and account for an inventory of cleaning and paper supplies. Order needed supplies as needed.

·Note any unusual conditions (leaks, damage, breaks) needing repair in buildings, grounds, or equipment and report to the Facilities Manager.

·Use appropriate and safe practices (chemicals and warning signs) in the performance of work.

·Perform other duties as required and under the direction of the Facilities Manager.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required 

·Requires the ability to work a flexible schedule. May include nights and weekends.

·Must be prepared to execute all duties and responsibilities in a safe and timely manner.

·Knowledge of the hazards and precautionary methods necessary to and for safe custodial operations.

·Ability to operate commercial cleaning equipment, such as vacuums, steam cleaners, hand tools, floor buffers, and other similar equipment. 

·Understand and follow written instructions and comprehend labeling on products.

·Ability to work safely and efficiently.

·Lift 45 pounds or more; move 75 pounds or more.

·Complete tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision. Follow Supervisor’s instructions. 

·Must possess a valid VA Driver’s License.

 

Minimum Education and Training 

·High school diploma or relevant qualifications required.

·6-12 months of Porter experience. 

·Commercial cleaning experience preferred.

Authorized hiring range: $35,000 - $40,000
