LEGAL UPDATES AND INFORMATION
The responsibilities of a new resident of Virginia, concerning driver's license and vehicle
Drivers License: Under Virginia law section 46.2-308 of the Code of Virginia, a new resident over the age of sixteen years and three months, who has been duly licensed as a driver under the law of another state or country, shall for the first sixty (60) days of his residency in the Commonwealth be permitted to drive a motor vehicle on the highways.
City Decal: Under the Manassas Park city code of 14-115 every vehicle that is housed in Manassas Park is required to have a Manassas Park city decal for more information please contact the Treasure’s Office at 703-335-8835.
Vehicle Registration: Section 46.2-662 of the Code of Virginia allows a new resident and owner of any passenger vehicle, pickup or panel truck, or motorcycle which has been registered for the current calendar year in another state or country and displays the license plate or plates for the other state or country, to be operated in the Commonwealth of Virginia for the first thirty (30) days of new residency without paying any fees to Virginia.
Vehicle Inspection: Virginia law requires under section 46.2-1157 that any motor vehicle registered in Virginia and operated on a highway be submitted to an inspection of its mechanism and equipment by an official inspection station. Once the vehicle is registered, arrangements must be made to have the vehicle submitted to a safety inspection.
Vehicle Insurance: Proof of insurance or financial responsibility is required for each motor vehicle registered in the Commonwealth, as established by section 46.2-435 of the Code of Virginia.
