Mayor Jones Weekly Address
June 20, 2009

Dear Fellow Citizens,

Summer has arrived, and school’s out.  That means we will have children out playing in our neighborhoods throughout the day.  Please be careful and keep an eye out for those who may be more focused on catching their ball or riding their bicycle than watching out for cars moving on our streets.  It also means the time for outdoor barbeques moves into high gear.  Please be careful as your light and use your grills – last year we had several very unfortunate incidents where grills caused house fires.  With all of us watching out, we will have a safe, fun filled summer free of accidents.

As you have passed the intersection of Manassas Drive and Mathis Avenue over the last 4-5 days, you have seen the house at 103 Manassas Drive get demolished.  This marks the beginning of the reengineering and reconfiguration of the Manassas/Mathis intersection.  When completed the traffic backups we have experienced there should be relieved.

I hope that you will be able to join us at Signal Hill Park on the 4th of July for the city’s Independence Day celebration.  Plan to come early, enjoy the festivities, have some food from the vendors, listen to some excellent music, and wrap up the day with our annual fireworks display.  Please come out, have fun with your neighbors, and celebrate our nation’s birthday.

We have changed the meeting schedule for the city’s Governing Body meetings, effective in July.  With the Governing Body meeting on July 7, we change to a two meetings per month schedule.  We will meet on the first and third Tuesdays of each month – these meetings will be televised.  When we are required to call work sessions, those meetings will normally be called on the second and fourth Tuesdays, but are not regularly scheduled meetings.  To the extent possible, we will probably hold the work session meetings in the Community Room at the Police Station.  Please stay in touch with the city and the issues we are facing by reviewing the Governing Body meeting agenda, and by participating in meetings where items of interest will be discussed.

Please have a happy, safe, fun filled summer – hope to see you at the 4th or July celebration
